Caregivers: this is how to make the most of your resolutions

It’s that time of year! A new year is the ideal time to start new habits that help you live your best life. About sixty percent of us admit that we make New Year’s resolutions but unfortunately, only eight percent of us keep with them. Those of us who constantly take care of others probably know exactly what we’re talking about.

We want to help you set yourself up for success this year by showing you the best resolutions to make that you can actually stick to!

Resolution #1: Make more time for YOU

You can’t truly take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself! To get more you-time, learn to delegate (get the kids to load the washer and put away their own clothes); try to outsource (hire a dog walker or a cleaning person—even just once a week); put down your phone (you-time, in an instant).

Just these three super simple adjustments will give you more time to yourself so that you can recharge before you go back to taking care of everyone else.

Resolution #2: Start meal prepping

“Eating healthier” is probably one of the most jotted down new year’s resolutions of all time. But…it’s also super vague, so it’s difficult to achieve. We recommend starting with simple changes like drinking eight glasses of water each day and getting four servings of fruits and veggies each day.

Make this easier on yourself by meal prepping! Prepping your food in advance can help you stick to your goals, save time, and ensure you’re feeling your best self. This is also a great way to save time if you’re cooking meals for multiple people.

Resolution #3: Make time for wellness

In need of a naturopath, a dietician, or a mental health professional? Have no idea where to start and can’t get in to see your general practitioner for months? Check out virtual services! You can access naturopathic doctors, sleep coaches, meditations trainers, and even skincare therapists—all virtually.

This will save time as you can schedule appointments around your busy life, with no need to worry about arranging and rearranging everyone’s schedules.

Resolution #4: Make time for things that matter

Making time for the things that matter most is always a great resolution! With the ease of online services and apps it’s easy to eliminate the waiting time. Have your groceries delivered, hire a dog walking service, or even get your prescriptions delivered!

No matter what your resolution is, don’t give up! Resolving to do something different takes work and changing a habit is hard. As our friends at elizz.com have reminded us, “forgive yourself and get on with it.” Using tools like the It.Is.Time. Journal  to write down your resolutions or making an action plan or even sharing your goals with a supportive person may make all the difference. Whatever it is you choose to do this new year, know that Well.ca and elizz.com are here to support you!

  1. So sorry the virtual help is in Ontario only. I’m in Alberta and could use a dietician. Need support for weight loss– weight gain due to long time use of zyprexa.
Keep posting be as services expand!
