Life Itself is a biographical documentary about the late, world renowned film critic Roger Ebert and his caregiving wife, Chaz. The film is based on his best-selling memoir of the same name, and offers a poignant, honest portrait of his life; from growing up as the son of an electrician and a housewife, to winning a Pulitzer Prize at the Chicago Sun-Times, to becoming a pop culture touchstone through “Siskel and Ebert At The Movies”
However, the most touching moments of the film focus on Ebert’s struggle with cancer and his relationship with his caregiver, his wife Chaz. Life Itself chronicles in film the many tough experiences that caregivers and care recipients often face, such as the onset of physical disabilities, adjusting to a home environment after a prolonged hospital stay, deciding whether to write a DNR, and coping with grief and loss of life. This caregiving movie is raw and honest, and well worth seeing.
